Chapter Eleven

I throw his head as far away from his body as possible. That should keep him dead. I hope. Maybe his body will rise and randomly start slashing around with the axe he’s still clutching in his lifeless hand. I pry it from his thick fingers and take it with me towards the room at the end of the dark corridor.

Lily and Beth are behind the thick iron door; I can smell them.

“Girls?” I shout. “You alright?”

“We’re fine!”

Lily’s voice is muffled, but she sounds healthy enough.

Annoyingly, the big guy didn’t carry any keys on him, but I have my trusted lockpicks. Just when the door springs open, footsteps behind me announce someone approaching. I sniff the air. Gryphon and Lennox. Finally.

“What took you so-“

I swallow my words. They’re covered in blood. Lots and lots of blood. It cakes their hair, soaks their clothes, leaves a trail in their path. That’s going to be one long shower.

“One of them was a little bit of work,” Lennox says with a wry smile. He points at the head on the floor and gives it a little kick. “I see you had one of them as well.”

Gryphon inspects the headless body. “Nice work. I assume your poisons didn’t work either?”

I shake my head. “Not in the slightest. Beheading seemed to do it, though.”

He chuckles. “Yeah, same for ours. Except that it took me three of his resurrections to figure that out.”

“Feel like letting us out anytime soon?” Beth shouts from behind me. “It’s getting cold in here.”

Cold? It’s rather warm down here. But I see why she said that when I enter their cell. They’re naked, both of them. They didn’t even get to keep their underwear.

“Guys, keep back,” I tell the guys before they can follow me. I know Lily wouldn’t have a problem with men seeing her naked, but I’m not sure about Bethany. And to be honest, I don’t want the men to see anyone except for me that way. No more naked girls for them. I’m a cat, I’m possessive by nature.

I pick the handcuffs keeping Lily and Beth shackled to the wall, before sending the men to find some clothes in the house.

While we wait for them to return, I sit down on the wooden bench and rub the blood off my knives. They’ll get a proper polish when we’re back home, and they probably need some sharpening as well after being stopped by that leather armguard. I love looking after my weapons. It’s a calming procedure that lets me clear my head and focus on a simple task that doesn’t require much thinking.

“What happened to Ben?” Beth asks after a moment of silence. “They split us up as soon as they’d subdued us.”

“We’re going after him once we’re done turning this house upside down. They were fools to lead us here. It seems to have been used as a hideout and I want to gather as much intelligence as I can before we leave.”

“Why did they take our clothes?” Lily asks.
